Today, Bandai Namco released a new story trailer for Sword Art Online: Echoes of Aincrad, offering an in-depth look at the upcoming action RPG and confirming the return of several popular characters from the series.
We get to see the now-iconic, shocking scenario Sword Art Online fans have come to love as the video begins, during the opening ceremony, where the logout option suddenly disappears. It is then revealed that escape is possible only by clearing all 100 floors of the game; failure results in remaining imprisoned, and death in the game means dying in real life.
The dialogue for the second story trailer for Echoes of Aincrad is set to “Live to Survive” by Aimer and focuses heavily on mounting tension, confusion, and accusations between ordinary rookie players and beta testers, notably referencing Diabel’s death and blaming testers for withholding crucial boss attack patterns.

Despite the chaos, several characters refuse to give up, including the protagonist, who vows to become stronger and continue fighting, while another insists on helping stop the looming apocalypse.
Players assume the role of this custom hero, teaming up with well-known allies to clear the game’s 100 floors and escape. The importance of teamwork, trusted allies, and information sharing becomes a central theme as the characters declare that “there’s no better weapon than good old-fashioned information.”
Combat features partnerships with series mainstays, such as Asuna, Agil, and Lisbeth. The Switch System allows players to alternate companions between offensive and support roles in real time, adding tactical depth to battles.
The setting and story once again take place in the Sword Art Online universe, which originally debuted with Sword Art Online: End World. Since then, the franchise has sold more than 10 million units, making it one of the most successful manga and anime adaptations in gaming.
Sword Art Online: Echoes of Aincrad launches July 10, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam, with pre-orders now available.
