Today, Xbox announced a new feature that lets players access and play games they already own more flexibly, bringing digital benefits to supported physical disc-based titles. Xbox Insiders can test the feature starting August 31, 2026, as Microsoft continues its push to preserve game libraries across generations.
The new feature aims to help players maintain their game libraries as consoles and technology evolve. Xbox says it wants to make it easier for players to bring their existing libraries forward, whether they bought games physically or digitally.
Most disc-based games for Xbox One and Xbox Series X will support the feature. Players can claim a digital entitlement by inserting the physical disc into their console and launching the game. After claiming, they can access digital benefits like Xbox Play Anywhere and Cloud Gaming where available, while the disc will still work as usual.
At launch, the feature will support thousands of games, with more titles to be added over time. Not every disc-based game will be eligible at first, so players should check if their games are supported before claiming digital entitlements.
This update is part of the ongoing commitment to game preservation as it supports players across multiple hardware generations. By letting physical purchases access digital features, the company aims to ensure that players can keep playing the games they own for years to come.
Insiders can test the feature and share feedback through the Insider community and Xbox Player Voice program. The company asks Insiders to check existing discussions before posting new feedback, helping staff and moderators track input and offer support.
Players who are not currently members of the Insider Program can join through the Insider Hub, with program gives participants early access to upcoming features while allowing Microsoft to gather feedback before the functionality becomes available more broadly.
