Today, Brainfruit Studio announced their upcoming game Sheeps, which turns sheep-counting into a fast-paced, roguelike challenge. Players are tasked with counting the number of sheep that cross a field, which sounds easy until the difficulty ramps up and each round adds twists to make it more complicated.
In Sheeps, the more accurate the player’s count, the better upgrades they will get, with options such as making every fifth sheep blue, guaranteeing an even count, and capturing the sheep in a magical bag. These upgrades can make counting easier or give the player a way to make a reliable guess. Of course, there will be obstacles that make it tougher, such as distracting balloons, wolves in sheep’s clothing, and gusty winds that blow the sheep around.
Sheeps features health mechanics and occasional unfair curses, as well as a story-rich narrative that tells where exactly all of the sheep came from in the first place. There’s a mysterious rift from which the sheep are emerging, and players will put together who (or what) is behind the phenomenon.
The game can be played solo or along with a friend through couch co-op. Two people counting might make the job easier…or harder, depending on whether they agree or not. There are also competitive mini-games available when a break from counting is needed.
Here’s what Garrett Miller, who is the co-director of Sheeps and actually grew up on a working farm counting sheep during his childhood, has to say about the game:
“Counting sheep sounds simple until they start flying, doubling back, and throwing little surprises at you. We wanted to take this elementary skill that everyone thinks they understand and turn it into a deep, chaotic and endlessly fun game that anyone can pick up and play.”
Sheeps is set to launch in 2027 on PC via Steam.
