Today, Capcom released a brand new Curious Cases: Miyamoto Musashi showcase for Onimusha: Way of the Sword, offering a closer look at the legendary swordsman who serves as the game’s protagonist.
Narrated by the mysterious Oni Lady, voiced by Yuriri Naka, the character-focused trailer explores Musashi’s backstory, visual design, and combat abilities in Onimusha: Way of the Sword. At the start of the game, Musashi arrives in early Edo-period Kyoto as a proud samurai determined to prove he is the strongest swordsman under heaven.
As his journey continues, the tale takes a supernatural turn when grotesque Genma demons suddenly besiege Kyoto. During the attack, Musashi is unwillingly entrusted with the Oni Gauntlet, granting him extraordinary physical strength and the ability to absorb the souls of defeated enemies.
Despite its power, Musashi has little interest in relying on supernatural abilities, preferring to prove his strength through his own skill with the sword. Capcom revealed that they drew heavy inspiration from legendary Japanese actor Toshiro Mifune for Musashi’s appearance.
Rather than presenting him as a pristine or idealized samurai, the character is designed as a rugged, battle-worn vagabond warrior, covered in blood and mud as he fights his way through Kyoto, as combat combines returning mechanics from the Onimusha series with several new systems. The high-risk, high-reward Issen counter system returns alongside powerful Break Issen finishing attacks, and the game introduces new parry and deflection mechanics designed to create more fluid, cinematic sword fights.
Musashi’s combat style also embraces improvisation, as players can use objects found throughout the environment as weapons, giving them additional ways to deal with the Genma beyond traditional swordplay. Onimusha: Way of the Sword is scheduled to launch on September 4, 2026.
