Today, Cities: Skylines 2 developer Iceflaker Studios released the fourth entry in a developer update series for the simulator, giving players  “A Peek into Performance” and focusing on the technical aspects of the game’s simulation.

One of the most important performance-based additions to this month’s update is the reveal of a new Benchmark Tool. This will allow players to check performance between patches and how updates affect performance on each individual computer, while also giving developers a chance to gather data on which areas and types of hardware need more focus.

Cities: Skylines 2 will also begin to use multicore CPUs to manage the dynamic world, in which nothing is precomputed or baked in. To address some of the bottlenecks that have been occurring, Iceflaker Studios is even working with developers at Unity Profiler.

They also stated they are facing challenges with maintaining performance while allowing players to seamlessly zoom from individual citizen details to a full city overview. The devs also mentioned that they are currently prioritizing the LODs and rendering algorithms, which will improve GPU performance and be immediately noticeable, even in your smallest cities.

Simulation performance will also be a major focus of the next update, and a number of different fixes – reducing the number of pedestrians to better reflect the size of your city, which would help the simulation performance, especially in larger cities – are being looked into at the moment. These are just a handful of the problems the team seems to be addressing at the moment to improve the game’s overall performance and gameplay.

In other series news, Paradox Interactive recently celebrated 11 years of the franchise with quite a few celebrations, including a free Cities: Skylines 2 Anniversary Update, bringing a new arena, zone toggling, an encyclopedia, and more.

Cities: Skylines 2 is currently available on PC (Steam, Epic Games Store, and Microsoft Store/Xbox Game Pass), with console releases pending. For more information on this and other city simulators, be sure to check back to Simulation Daily for updates.
