Today, Bungie published an extensive statement about its future, as well as the future of the Destiny and Marathon franchises.
The statement was signed by Poria Torkan, Bungie’s Studio Head, and I’m Josh Deane, Head of Product and General Manager of Marathon.
While many fans believed that Destiny was a lost cause following the many layoffs and the halt of Destiny 2’s active development, it looks like the public outcry forced the bean counters at Sony to take a rare step back.
Torkan vows that the studio is not done with the franchise, and it’s foundational for the future of the company.
Yet, before they create something new, they have decided to unvault all the content that has been made unavailable to Destiny 2 players, admitting that it should never have been removed to begin with.
While the developers admit that Marathon did not draw as many players as expected, they’re not giving up on it, so they’re keeping what players like but expanding the survival aspects of the game.
To summarize, Bungie will measure its success against four core commitments:
- Build a stronger long-term future for Destiny, while honoring and restoring its past.
- Evolve Marathon to grow our community and build a sustainable future.
- Increase transparency around development priorities.
- Communicate more consistently, especially when plans change.

Interestingly, this proves that public outrage can push the bean counters at Sony to walk back some of their more unpopular decisions. We’ll have to wait and see if it’ll be an isolated case or there will be more.
