Today, Limited Run Games announced that The Lord of the Rings: War in the North – Legacy Edition will be released on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, and Xbox. Pre-orders are now open for both Standard and Deluxe Editions and will remain available through December 13, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. ET.
Originally developed by Snowblind Studios and later updated by Aspyr for the Legacy Edition, The Lord of the Rings: War in the North was first released in 2011. The action RPG offers a darker interpretation of Middle-earth, combining third-person combat with character progression, customizable equipment, and a story that unfolds alongside the events of The Lord of the Rings.
The Lord of the Rings: War in the North – Legacy Edition follows a new Fellowship tasked with defending the North while Frodo and Samwise make their journey toward Mount Doom. Players face Agandaûr, a Black Númenórean serving Sauron who has assembled a powerful force in the ruins of Fornost, putting the region’s survival in jeopardy as Sauron’s armies advance.

Players can play The Lord of the Rings: War in the North – Legacy Edition solo or cooperatively with another player through online or split-screen multiplayer. Players can also switch between three heroes, each built around a different combat role: Eradan, a Dúnedain Ranger specializing in stealth, bows, and swords; Andriel, an Elven Loremaster who provides magical support through healing and area-of-effect abilities; and Farin, a Dwarven Champion focused on durability and powerful melee attacks.
Character progression allows players to develop their preferred playstyles by unlocking skills, abilities, weapons, and armor throughout the campaign. The Legacy Edition also retains the game’s mature approach to Middle-earth, featuring more brutal combat, bloodier battlefields, and a story centered on the harsh realities of war.
The Standard Edition will be available for $49.99 and includes a physical copy of the game on disc or game card, an O-Ring slipcover, and an eight-page booklet titled A Wayfinder’s Ledger featuring riddles from the game and the official riddles for the Riddles in the Dark activation.
The Lord of the Rings: War in the North – Legacy Edition Deluxe Edition will cost $79.99 and includes the physical game, a SteelCase, an exclusive letter written by actor Jed Brophy on weathered-style paper with a wax seal sticker, and a full-color cloth map.
