Sega showcased its upcoming game by Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, Stranger than Heaven, providing a look at its complex and interesting combat system.
During a livestream on YouTube, the developer showcased the media demo that was available at Summer Game Fest, with plenty of commentary explaining exactly how the combat system works, which is great for understanding the ins and outs of the mechanics.
The demo is split into three parts, so we see not only combat, but also three different eras and their locations.
We start in 1915 in Kokura (the current Kitakyushu in Fukuoka Prefecture), where we see a brawl against a number of goons.
Then we move on to 1929 in Kure, Hiroshima Prefecture, where we see a fight against a more powerful enemy and his underlings.
Lastly, we see Minami Osaka in 1943, where we witness a battle against a rather sneaky ronin.
Despite the fact that Stranger than Heaven is basically a prequel to the Yakuza/Like a Dragon series, it’s interesting to see that the developers didn’t just rehash the same battle mechanics, but overhauled them considerably.
