During a livestream hosted by Microsoft on Twitch, we heard more about the success of Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 on PS5, on top of a tentative release window for PlayStation VR2 Support.
Head of Microsoft Flight Simulator Jorg Neumann mentioned that the PS5 version of the simulator, released in November, enjoyed a “really great launch” with “tons of new players.”
He added that the team was actually surprised by how large the number of players on PS5 is, and thanked existing simmers for welcoming them nicely. He received a lot of feedback about how welcome the new members of the community felt.
“We launched on PS5. That was really a great launch. Tons of new players. Actually, it’s surprising how large the player count is there.
Thank you so much for being nice to them. I’ve got a lot of feedback from people saying how welcome they felt to the hobby and I think that’s really due to you all guys.”
We also get an update on when PlayStation VR2 support will be added to the PS5 version of the simulator. Sony’s certification for the update that will include it (Sim Update 5) has already passed Sony’s certification, and there are only three remaining “must fix” bugs to address as of this morning.
As such, we’re “super close” to the release, and the hope is to launch the update next week.
Third-party content for PS5 users will come with stricter policies requiring a platform assessment to make sure that the products won’t badly influence performance. As such, the selection will be curated on a per-product basis, and the first batch has already been evaluated.
The plan is to launch the first batch of Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 third-party add-ons on PS5 with the Sim Update 5, so that’s another perk users on Sony’s Consoles can look forward to, hopefully next week.
Incidentally, we also hear that cross-play between PS5 and PC/Xbox is technically possible, but it would be a lot of work to implement. It remains a possibility for the future, but it’s still undecided.
More details have been shared about the future of the simulator on all platforms, including PS5, and you can check them out in our dedicated article.
