Today, Square Enix officially announced the upcoming third and final installment in its modernized Final Fantasy remake, titled Final Fantasy VII: Revelation.
The announcement came at the end of the Summer Game Fest showcase, where Square Enix confirmed that PlayStation will not release exclusivity and that the game will arrive on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC (via Steam), and Nintendo Switch 2 simultaneously. The reveal had everything from its open world to new characters and locations you’ll be able to explore.
To start, we got a good look at an updated version of the Highwind Airship and the new role it’ll play in navigation. Players will finally gain full control of the iconic Highwind airship to navigate the open world, even featuring skydiving mechanics that let you jump directly off the Highwind to land in new map territories.

Those expanded territories include the Outskirts of Midgar, the Madil Archipelago, and the highly anticipated Nation of Wutai, which are the only ones confirmed in the trailer so far. Both Vincent Valentine and Cid Highwind have also been fully integrated as playable characters in Final Fantasy VII Revelation. Each character boasts their own unique abilities, as we get a good glimpse of Vincent’s beastly transformations and Cid’s high-mobility spear and staff strikes, as seen in the gameplay intro trailer.
The Final Fantasy VII Revelation gameplay introduction trailer also showcased the expanded job system and hybrid combat, which allows players to switch the combat classes of Cloud, Tifa, and the rest of the party to suit different strategic needs. The battle mechanics blend fluid real-time movement with tactical menus, featuring seamless party member swapping and the instantaneous chaining of Active Time Battle (ATB) abilities across characters.
The presentation also confirmed a massive influx of late-game magic, including the return of top-tier summon spells like Ifrit, right into the standard party dynamic. You can see this and more in the trailer below:
The full playable roster includes Cloud, Tifa, Barret, Red XIII, Yuffie, Cait Sith, Vincent Valentine, and Cid Highwind, with Matt Mercer confirmed to be joining as the voice of Vincent Valentine. Each character will play a vital role in wrapping up the narrative, which centers heavily on “resolve,” as Sephiroth’s ultimate plan to harness the planet’s lifestream to achieve godhood comes to its final, chaotic fruition.
When speaking of his excitement for Final Fantasy VII: Revelation, Creative Director Tetsuya Nomura had the following to say:
“As creators, we have carefully built and nurtured the FINAL FANTASY VII series over many years, expanding it through numerous spin-off titles along the way. Over time, we believe each fan has developed their own unique interpretation of the story, and our goal has been to bring all of these FINAL FANTASY VII stories together so that they ultimately converge in the final chapter of the Remake Series. While there may be a mix of excitement and uncertainty, we are confident that this journey will remain an unforgettable experience for years to come. Thank you sincerely for joining us and being part of this journey over so many years.”
Final Fantasy VII: Revelation serves as the direct sequel to Final Fantasy VII Remake and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, wrapping up the multi-game reimagining of the iconic 1997 RPG.
