Game Science’s new action RPG Black Myth: Wukong is off to a crazy start if the number of concurrent players on Steam is an indication.
According to the tracking site SteamDB, the game currently counts over 2 million concurrent players on Valve’s platform. Specifically, it’s at 2,202,252 at the moment of this writing and still growing.
The game also received “overwhelmingly positive” reviews on Steam, with almost 73,000 positive reviews (95% of the total).
It’s certainly a triumph for Shenzhen-based Chinese developer Game Science, especially considering that they were a relative unknown before the first trailer of Black Myth: Wukong debuted in 2020.
It immediately caught the attention of many due to the fast, fluid action and the impressive graphics. Back then, it was developed in Unreal Engine 4, but the final build released earlier today on PC and PS5 is built in Epic Games’ Unreal 5.3.
The numbers above are even more impressive if you think that they’re limited to Steam. We don’t know how many are playing on the Epic Games Store and PS5 right now, so it’s likely that the real concurrent player total is much higher. The game will also come to Xbox Series X|S at some point, with further potential for expansion.
Looking at Steam alone, 2.2 million concurrent players place Black Myth: Wukong in second place for all-time concurrent peak player count, with only PUBG above it at 3.257 million players. It’s also by far the most-played game on Steam right now, beating Valve’s own Counter-Strike 2.
This is another triumph for Chinese developers, who have shown the world that they can create very compelling games in recent years.
The success of HoYoverse’s games like Genshin Impact and Honkai: Star Rail is certainly another great example, while Sony Interactive Entertainment has been nurturing local studios with its China Hero Project.
