Sony announced its financial results for the first quarter of fiscal year 2026, related to the period between April and June 2026, alongside the traditional update on PS5 shipments.

According to the financial documents published by the company, 1.6 million PS5 units were shipped in the quarter, bringing the lifetime total to 95.3 million units.

If you’re interested in a comparison with the Nintendo Switch 2, we’ll know next week, when Nintendo releases its own financial results.

Sales for the Game & Network Services Segment, which is the corporate lingo to indicate PlayStation, were essentially flat year-on-year, at 937.1 billion yen. They were impacted by lower sales of third-party games and hardware, offset by foreign exchange rates.

Operating Income was up 37% year-on-year at 54.1 billion yen thanks to the refunds of US tariffs and foreign exchange rates, partly offset by an increase in costs, including “investments for the next-generation platform and restructuring costs.”

Of course, none of the benefits of these tariff refunds appears to have been used to ease the burden of pricing for customers, surprising no one ever.

PlayStation monthly active users were 125 million accounts in June, up 2% year-on-year and beating the record for the month of June.

Total playtime during the quarter dropped 4% year-on-year. Yet, Sony argues that user engagement continues to be solid due to season updates for major titles and new hit games.

The company changed its forecast for the full fiscal year announced in May. Now it expects 4,540 billion yen (an upward revision of 120 billion yen or 3%) in sales due to foreign exchange rates, and 660 billion yen in profit (an upward revision of 60 billion yen or 10%) due to the tariff refunds, foreign exchange rates, and expected lower costs, partly offset by adjustments to the first-party titles roadmap, which in layman’s terms means game delays.

Sony reiterated that it has secured all the memory it needs to meet its projected PS5 sales for this fiscal year, so the company won’t change its plans for hardware profitability.

Other gaming companies have already announced their financial results this quarter, including Koei Tecmo and Microsoft. You can expect more reports on this topic in the coming days and weeks.
