The Nintendo Switch 2 was officially revealed during a Direct livestream earlier this week, exciting many at the prospect of getting their hands on the next portable console on June 5, 2025. Unfortunetly, Polygon has reported that US customers won’t be able to put in pre-orders for the indefinite future due to the new tariffs outlined by the Trump administration earlier this week.

The tariffs were announced a few hours after the direct, which is why Nintendo has had to change its plans. The “reciprocal tariffs” are being placed on dozens of countries, including those home to Nintendo Manufacturing partners.

Vietnam and China are two of the most notable hardware producers hit with tariffs, with the former getting 46% and the latter getting 34%. Originally, the Nintendo Switch price point was set for $449.99, but these new developments could raise that even higher.

Games are also at risk of increasing in price, which could be a big problem considering how much of a negative response fans already had to hearing that the base price for new titles on the console were being raised to $79.99 (before tariffs were announced).

Currently, the Nintendo Switch 2 is still set to launch on the originally announced release date of June 5, 2025. The company has stated that it will update information on pricing and pre-orders at a later date once it’s had time to “assess the potential impact of tariffs and evolving market conditions.”
