Earlier this week, developer 4A Games and publisher Deep Silver officially confirmed Metro 2039, the fourth mainline entry in the post-apocalyptic franchise, was in development. Today, they showcased gameplay and revealed that it is coming to Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Steam, and Epic this winter.
The official reveal showcased the handcrafted, story‑driven single‑player FPS campaign, a claustrophobic, immersive atmosphere, and psychological horror. We were also treated to interviews from 4A Games’ Jon Bloch (Executive Producer), Andriy ‘mLs’ Shevchenko (Creative Director), and Pavel Ulmer (Co-Creative Director & Lead Audio Designer).
The setting and story for Metro 2039 will once again revolve around the last survivors of nuclear war, who have been locked in bitter conflict deep in the Metro tunnels beneath the poisoned city of Moscow. Now, finally, they have been united by a single leader, a fanatical Spartan known as Hunter, though not everything is what it seems.

Instead of Artum, Metro 2039 has you play as The Stranger, a recluse haunted by violent waking nightmares. The protagonist is soon forced to undertake a harrowing journey back down to the Metro, a place he swore he would never return to.
The Stranger will be a fully voiced lead protagonist, making a notable step towards deeper immersion in Metro’s iconic atmospheric storytelling. The game will take place 4 years after Metro Exodus and will be much darker, featuring storylines and events influenced by the team’s lived experiences during the Russo-Ukrainian War.
The series was originally released back in 2005 with Metro 2033, based on the novels of Russian writer Dmitry Glukhovsky. As of February 2024, the Metro game series has shipped over 16.2 million units, driven by the latest entry, Metro Exodus, which alone has sold over 10 million copies since its 2019 release.
