Today, Sega had a few reveals to share about the Virtua Fighter franchise, including Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. and the new game code-named New Virtua Fighter Project.

First of all, we get a deep dive on the new game with Art Director Ryo Shibasaki.

We hear that the series is based on innovation, and the inability to find the right new idea led to many attempts to create new games that didn’t materialize. This time, the developers want to “channel Virtua Fighter’s reality aspect.” Since it’s developed by Like a Dragon’s Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, its creators also focused on the narrative aspect.

Another interesting innovation is that, thanks to the extensive use of motion capture, the new Virtua Fighter game doesn’t have a single guard move. Instead, each guard animation is directly correlated to the attack it’s executed to defend against.

You can check out the video below.

Incidentally, earlier today, we got the reveal of the return of a classic Virtua Fighter character, Wolf Hawkfield.

It’s worth reminding that the New Virtua Fighter Project is early in development and doesn’t have any release date or even announced platforms. Information has been pretty thin since the announcement at The Game Awards.

We also get an announcement regarding Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O., which is going multiplatform with an upcoming launch on PS5, Nintendo Switch 2, and Xbox Series X|S. It’ll support cross-play, including the current Steam version, and rollback netcode.

It’ll also come with new content that will be revealed at a later date, alongside the release date, which has not been announced just yet.

Below you can watch the whole VF Direct Spring 2025 presentation, also showing some concept art and detailing the new design of Wolf Hawkfield.

In other EVO Japan news, over the past couple of days of tournaments and reveals, we saw the announcement of Fahkumram for Tekken 8, the release date of Unika in Guilty Gear Strive, and the release date and first gameplay of Galleon for Granblue Fantasy Versus Rising.
