Orbx has announced that the early access for its Kola Map for DCS World will end soon, but it won’t be the end of support.
The popular map will fully release on July 22, 2025, providing a much-needed Scandinavian setting for the military flight simulator by Eagle Dynamics.
The developer also revealed a list of what has already been delivered since the map’s early access release and the several updates that followed.
- 1.35 million km² of land and sea coverage
- 20+ airfields with surrounding infrastructure and navigation
- Custom ports, radar sites, urban centres, and military facilities
- Free and payware missions available via Orbx and ED stores
- Significant VRAM and performance optimisations
On top of that, more is coming with an update this month, including the following additional airfields.
- Kilpyavr (XLMW)
- Luostari (XLML)
- Koshka Yavr (XLMY)
- Kalevala (ULPK)
- Poduzhemye (XLPU)
- Afrikanda (XLMF)
Yet, as mentioned above, the end of early access won’t be the end of official support, and more content and improvements will be released as time goes on
To start, over the next three-to-six months, the developer promised enhanced ground textures for those who enjoy flying low, more VRAM optimizations and rendering performance updates, and additional airfields.
Specifically, we’ll be getting Boden Army Air Base (ESPG) and Gällivare Lapland Airport (ESNG) in Sweden, Kautokeino Airfield (ENKA) and Værøy Airport (ENVR) in Norway, and Ranua Airfield (EFRU) in Finland.
Additional support was pledged directly by Orbx CEO Anna Cicognani with a statement:
“The development of the Kola map is not ending with Early Access. We are committed to adding content and updating the map in line with the platform technical innovations.
Orbx started to work on the map over three years ago and this has been a great project for us. We have learned much about DCS and will use that knowledge together with our passion for creating terrain and sceneries to enhance this map even further.”
The map can be purchased on Orbx Direct, the DCS World store, and Steam, keeping in mind that the Steam version is only compatible with the Steam version of the simulator.
Below, you can check out a trailer showing off the module.
If you’re unfamiliar with DCS World, it’s a free-to-play flight simulator focusing on military aviation from World War 2 to the present day. It’s available exclusively for PC.
While the sim is free-to-play, it pretty much requires paid modules to be fully enjoyed, including aircraft, campaigns, and maps like this one.
Recently, Eagle Dynamics unveiled its plans for the implementation of the dynamic campaign, while the upcoming Mig-29A Fulcrum was just made available for pre-order.
The developer also provided a look at more content coming this year and beyond, including an F-15C Eagle and an F-35 Lightning II.
