The game starts with Khazan, a great general and empire of the Pell Los Empire, tortured and banished from his kingdom. After a devastating war against the dragon Hismar, the people of the empire loved and admired Khazan. The emperor was jealous of this, and he falsely convicted Khazan and another hero, Ozma, of treason.

The emperor slashed the tendons in Khazan’s arms, sending him to live out the rest of his days on a snowy mountain. Luckily, an avalanche took out some of the guards transporting him, busting open the cage he was in. This freed him and started his bloody quest for revenge.

The early gameplay video shows Khazan hacking and slashing through the remaining guards, who were scattered in the avalanche. The Lead Combat Designer, Lee Won Tae, explained that combat in The First Berserker: Khazan focuses on Khazan’s prior position as a general. He has snappy and precise attacks, and his dodges don’t have him rolling on the ground.

He can also take hits head-on, a facet of his personality leftover from being a barbarian-turned-general. Khazan also runs in the Blade Phantom, a story feature that gives him more power and brings him closer to being the actual first berserker.

The goal was for Khazan to feel strong, overwhelming his enemies with that strength. He’s also an expert on a variety of weapons, letting players pick one that fits their play style. In the gameplay video, Khazan is duel-wielding an axe and sword. Other gameplay shows that he can use javelins and two-handed weapons, as well.

The First Berseker: Khazan takes place in medieval Europe in the Dungeon and Fighter universe. The game means to bring people into Khazan’s world, sympathizing with him. They can also experience the different endings based on decision-making that impacts the end of the game.

Excited fans can view both the breakdown for the game, “Unveil the Universe,” and the gameplay content below. More gameplay footage should follow later this month, as The First Berserker: Khazan will be playable at gamescom 2024.

The First Berserker: Khazan is set to release in 2025 on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
