Today, the developers of Skyblivion, the fan remake of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, announced they are pushing the release of the project back to 2026.
This might come as a surprise to fans of the project, as the developers stated back in April – around when the official Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion remake was shadow-dropped – that not only was the project still in development, but that it was on track for a 2025 release. In the official blog posts, Communications Lead Evan T. Flatt did reassure fans that “the game is in the best state it has ever been.”
Like many other video game delays before it, the reason behind pushing back The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Fan Remake Skyblivion is that the team wants to ensure we can deliver the polished, stable, and complete experience that fans deserve. Some examples of what this extra time will allow them to improve can be seen below:
- Imperial City Assets & Interiors: Completing the last remaining 3D assets and interior designs for the Imperial City, our final major location hurdle.
- Navmesh & Quest Implementation: Finalizing navmesh work across all locations, which is critical for all NPCs and creatures to function correctly. This directly clears the path for the last quest lines to be fully implemented and debugged.
- General Polish and Balance: Dedicating essential time to intensive testing, balancing, and bug fixing to ensure a smooth experience from day one.
It is important to note that there is plenty of content that is already complete, including the entire world map, all quest dungeons, and core 3D assets. Skyblivion was originally announced back in 2012 by Zilav, a modder and member of The Elder Scrolls Renewal Project.
The goal of this mod was to take the assets of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion and port them into the Creation Engine that was used to make The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. While there were some speed bumps in the production, including the release of multiple unstable versions in 2014, more modders like K. Rebel joined Skyblivion, shifting focus towards remaking the game from the ground up instead of redistributing its assets.
Earlier this year, a gameplay trailer was released showcasing 40 minutes of promising footage, as well as the first 15 minutes of the game also getting a video back in August.
