In case you haven’t heard, Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma is taking the series in a new direction. The classic Rune Factory formula has been reimagined, and everything about Guardians of Azuma points to that.

Players can choose between male and female protagonists, and they take on the role of Earth Dancer. This power lends them to different combat styles than previous Rune Factory games have seen, such as the bow and talisman. Other weapons shown off in the combat section of the new video include a fan and a short sword.

There’s also a new way to explore. Like past games in the series, players will be able to tame and ride monsters they come across. Plus, as the trailer showed, an umbrella helps players glide around.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a Rune Factory game if it solely focused on combat. Relationships are an important part of the game, and players can romance any of the 16 bachelors/bachelorettes. These characters include both gods and mortals — and the protagonist that players don’t choose.

Building relationships with characters is more important than just romance. As Earth dancers, players will help build entire villages. They’ll need to attract villagers to the land, assigning them jobs to help things run smoothly. There are several villages that players will encounter as they adventure through the Eastern-inspired fantasy world.

A bit of story was also teased. As Earth Dancers, players will need to fight the Blight that’s harming Azuma. This includes fighting and cleansing areas around the map. Several cutscenes were included in the trailer too, showing some touching moments from the game.

Excited fans can watch the Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma trailer below:

Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma will be released on May 30 for PC and Nintendo Switch.

Marvelous USA is holding a live stream on January 22 at 8 am PT/11 am ET that will have more details on the game. The live stream will be hosted by Ovilee May and feature the voice actors for the two protagonists, Subaru (Brandon McInnis) and Kaguya (Suzie Yang).

Players can pre-order Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma now. Additionally, an Earth Dancer Edition is available for the Nintendo Switch. This special edition includes the game, a Woolby Plush keychain, the original soundtrack on vinyl, an art book, and the Sacred Fan with a display stand. Plus, four DLCs are included:

  • Seasons of Love Bundle
  • Festive Attire and Dark Woolby Bundle
  • Rune Factory 4 Outfit Bundle
  • Useful Item Bundle

Marvelous Entertainment had a rough start to the fiscal year. While Guardians of Azuma is releasing at the end of it, it could bring things up.
