Today, Golden Hind Games announced it has regained full control of Pirates Republic after its previous relationship with publisher Toplitz Productions, celebrating the return of the game’s rights with a new gameplay teaser.
Originally announced in December 2022 as Pirate’s Dynasty, the project was initially associated with Toplitz Productions’ Dynasty franchise before renaming it Pirates Republic in September 2023 as it shifted toward a pirate survival sandbox. With the IP back under its control, Golden Hind Games has also confirmed it is working to move the game to Unreal Engine 5 and plans to open alpha testing to its Discord community.
Set in the Caribbean in 1714, Pirates Republic puts players in the role of shipwrecked survivors who must rebuild their lives after a disastrous voyage leaves them stranded and separated from their crew. Players must gather food, craft tools, recover materials, and rescue castaways while building a settlement that can eventually support their return to the sea and the construction of their own ships.
The survival sandbox features a flexible building system that lets players construct settlements piece by piece, placing walls, floors, roofs, and furniture to create their own communities. Shipbuilding is another major component, with a modular system that lets players customize vessels from the keel up by adjusting hull shapes, mast configurations, deck layouts and oar capacity, with more than 100 possible configurations ranging from nimble canoes to heavily armed frigates.
These design choices affect each vessel’s speed, durability and combat performance, while a selection of weapons, including light swivel guns and heavy cannons, gives players different options for naval engagements. Combat also extends to boarding actions and close-quarters encounters, where players can fight with swords, axes, and improvised weapons, or use flintlock pistols and muskets.
As players build their Fame, their settlement of Nassau will attract procedurally generated NPCs with individual appearances, backstories, skills and personalities. Players can recruit crew members, develop relationships, pursue romances, and manage a democratic society where residents expect fair shares and strong leadership, with failure to meet their expectations potentially resulting in the player being marooned on a deserted island.
Pirates Republic also emphasizes defending settlements and surviving the consequences of piracy. Players who plunder too aggressively may attract the attention of the royal fleets of England and Spain, forcing them to rely on their fortifications and naval forces to protect Nassau from increasingly dangerous threats. Battles can range from individual duels aboard burning ships to large-scale naval assaults, requiring players to use their vessels, weapons, and defenses strategically.
With Golden Hind Games back in control of the Pirates Republic rights, the planned transition to Unreal Engine 5 marks the next stage of development. The studio has not yet announced a release date or an alpha testing schedule, but it does have wishlisting available on Steam.
