EmpireCraft Studios and Toplitz Productions announced today that Wild West Pioneers – The Journey West will launch in Steam Early Access on September 25.
Wild West Pioneers – The Journey is a city builder that combines simulation, colony management, strategy, and sandbox gameplay, putting players in charge of a settlement during the westward expansion. Players start with a small settlement and build up the foundations needed to support a growing population, with elements like resource gathering, production chains, housing, and infrastructure playing a key role in surviving and thriving.
Food, wood, water, and other resources are essential for keeping settlers supplied, and more advanced production systems unlock as the town expands. Settlers in Wild West Pioneers – The Journey West each have individual needs and personal desires that affect their satisfaction.

After meeting basic needs like food, water, and shelter, settlers develop additional wants called Whims, which range from owning a cat or adding a fence to their home to visiting the saloon or attending church. Meeting these desires increases satisfaction and helps build a thriving community.
Exploration plays a major role, letting players build a Scouts’ Cabin and send scouts beyond the settlement to discover new areas, resources, quests, and sites for future outposts. Expeditions require preparation and do not always guarantee rewards, so players must balance exploration with the needs of their settlement as they expand across the frontier.
Production and logistics are central to gameplay, as players process wilderness resources through multiple production chains, including agriculture, livestock, hunting, and gathering, all of which help feed the population. As settlements grow, players must keep resources flowing to buildings and settlers, since shortages can halt production or lower satisfaction.
Players make key decisions that shape their communities, including choosing city officials like the mayor and sheriff, and decisions such as allowing new settlers can affect public opinion and lead to unexpected outcomes. Trade routes expand the economy, and players can prepare their towns for the arrival of the railroad.
EmpireCraft Studios has already used feedback from the Wild West Pioneers demo to improve the experience before Early Access. Updates include better road and building snapping, optional free placement, improved camera controls, a new tutorial, more town activity, and bug and performance fixes. The team plans to continue development with player feedback during Early Access.
