Capcom announced today that their latest game, Onimusha: Way of the Sword, has surpassed 1 million units worldwide on just the first day of its release. As such, the cumulative sales of the entire Onimusha series have reached over 10 million units total since the release of the very first game in the franchise back in 2001.
Onimusha: Way of the Sword was released on September 4 and is the first new title in the series in over 20 years. Featuring protagonist Miyamoto Musashi, the game is set in a dark fantasy version of Edo-era Kyoto. Equipped with a mystical Oni Gauntlet, Musashi uses his supernatural abilities and swordplay to combat rival swordsmen, demons, and other looming threats.
Capcom worked to expand awareness of the game through multiple demo releases and hands-on exhibitions prior to launch day. The company says this strategy helped the game surpass 1 million units on launch day. In fact, Onimusha: Way of the Sword’s release date had been moved up from later in September to September 4, so players were able to jump in a few weeks earlier than expected.
Additionally, Capcom is focusing on re-activating IPs that haven’t had a new title launch recently, just like Onimusha. It is working to leverage its rich library of titles to bring new games in older franchises to its audience.
Onimusha: Way of the Sword is out now and is available on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X\S, and Nintendo Switch 2.
Players who purchase the game before September 24 will receive an Early Adopter bonus, which differs depending on the edition of the game.
