Capcom announced today that its latest blockbuster game Monster Hunter Wilds has broken sales records in a big way.

The game was released on February 28 and in just three days it has sold a massive 8 million copies.

This makes Monster Hunter Wilds the fastest-selling game in Capcom’s whole history. That’s pretty amazing considering that the series spent a long time establishing itself as a portable franchise during the era of the 3DS family.

Yet, both Monster Hunter Wilds and its predecessor, Monster Hunter World, proved that the series doesn’t need a portable release to be successful, and many of its fans value fidelity and simulation complexity over portability.

Monster Hunter World remains by far the best-selling game of the franchise (and of Capcom’s history) with 21.3 million lifetime copies, but it would be surprising if Wilds did not eclipse that record considering that it has already sold almost 40% of that amount in three days.

Monster Hunter Rise, which is ranked second at 16.70 million units, is likely going to drop to third place soon enough.

We recently saw the game’s successful debut on PC with 1.3 million peak concurrent players on Steam on day one. That record was actually broken on day 2, with almost 1.4 million according to SteamDB.

It’ll certainly be interesting to see just how well the game will sell in the long term, but considering the debut, it wouldn’t be surprising if we’re looking at the beginning of a long series of broken records.

Monster Hunter Wilds is currently available for PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PS5. A free benchmark is available for PC if you want to know whether your rig can handle it.
