When most people think about esports teams, they probably envision young players in brightly colored jerseys, barely in their twenties or even younger. In Japan, there’s a professional team that defies this expectation.
Meet the Matagi Snipers, launched in 2021 and located in Japan’s super-cold Akita prefecture. They’re named after the traditional winter hunters of the Tohoku region, and they are all seniors.
Mostly active in Riot Games’ squad-based first-person hero shooter Valorant, the birth years of their top team members are certainly telling.
Hiro Boo and Nagi were born in 1959. Masayan was born in 1962. Mark25 was born in 1955. Yossy was born in 1956, and CaitSith is the most senior, having entered the world on April 14, 1951. She plays Valorant professionally at the tender age of 73.
The youngest member of the team is actually the coach, Remon, who is 31.
Today, the team posted a notice mentioning that they’re recruiting new members for their Valorant team.
Most requirements aren’t very strict. Applicants don’t need a specific rank and experience with the game isn’t required (albeit it’s preferred). Yet, there is one specific requirement that not many Valorant players will match. The birthdate of all applicants needs to be April 1, 1965 or earlier.
If you’re not over 59, you’ll have to be content with cheering.
The notice also mentions that the team’s goal is to participate in the Valorant Challengers Japan competition and win.
The Matagi Snipers’ motto “A figure respected even by grandchildren” is inspiring, and their website illustrates the team’s philosophy, which is just as uplifting, especially considering Japan’s aging population.
We formed a team ‘MATAGI SNIPERS’ consisting of players over 60 years old to break down stereotypes and age barriers. This is a new opportunity to make a big impact on the gaming scene, which is currently dominated by younger generations. We are committed to fostering cross-generational communication through games and striving to become a team that inspires all generations.
Valorant is currently available for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S, albeit the console version is still in open beta.
