While the TikTok ban in the US has made headlines all over the world, apparently it isn’t the only app that got hit by American legislators, as Marvel Snap has also gone dark in the country.
Tonight many players, including our very own Brittany found themselves locked out of the game with a rather ominous message, which you can see below.
The message calls out directly the law enacted in the United States targeting apps owned by foreign adversaries and mentions that the app can’t be used in the Land of the Free.
That being said, it also adds that the developers are working to restore service and encourages players to stay tuned.
Marvel Snap is operated by Nuverse, which is a subsidiary of TikTok’s owner ByteDance, which explained why the game has been caught in the ban.
Incidentally, the same message was initially displayed when Americans tried to access TikTok, but was then replaced by a second message mentioning that President Trump has indicated that he’ll work with the company on a solution to reinstate the app once he takes office. This new message has not been displayed on Marvel Rivals at the moment of this writing.
In the meantime, Marvel Snap remains available as usual in other regions, like Europe and Japan, which we were able to check out directly.
At the moment, we don’t know what will happen to Marvel Snap, and whether it’ll be included in President Trump’s reported plans. The situation remains very much fluid.
Update: the on-screen message has changed mentioning that the outage wasn’t planned but Marvel Snap “isn’t going anywhere” and the developers are working to get the game up as soon as possible.
At the moment, we don’t know when that will be.
Update 2: TikTok’s ban was suddenly lifted “as a result of President Trump’s efforts” (according to a message displayed on the app). At the moment of this writing logins in Marvel Snap aren’t working just yet in the US, but it’s likely that the app will become accessible again soon.
One thing is for sure. The game was quite successful, so I can’t imagine Disney or Marvel will be pleased by this source of revenue being cut off in the United States,
If you’re unfamiliar with Marvel Snap, it’s available (outside of the United States) for iOS and Android, and it also has a client for Windows PC (which is also affected by the ban). It has been active since 2022.
It’s a digital collectible card game featuring Marvel’s fan-favorite characters.
If you’re affected by the ban, perhaps you’ll be interested in Marvel Rivals. If you are, you can read our interview with its developers.
