Nintendo has released the Overview Trailer for Mario Tennis Fever, the next iteration of the Mario Tennis games. In it, players are shown the basic mechanics of the game, the new characters coming (like the Fever Rackets), several game modes, and more.
To start with, Nintendo showed fans the basic shot mechanics, such as Topspin, Lobs, and Slices. Other mechanics shone off include Slides and Leaps. These have been a part of previous Mario Tennis games, too, along with a Swing Mode to play the game like you’re on a tennis court.
Next up are the Fever Rackets, a new feature that gives players ways to switch up their game. Players are able to choose a special racket that has abilities, such as freezing part of the court, summoning a Pokey on the opposite side of the court, or even causing flames to scatter on the opponents’ side.
Those abilities all focus on being on the offensive, but there will be defensive rackets, too. A Golden Dash Racket lets the user quickly dash to the ball, and a Shadow Racket summons another teammate for a brief period of time to help out.
All in all, there will be 30 different rackets that players can choose, which can be used with any character.
Speaking of characters, there are 38 to choose from. These include several new characters to Mario Tennis, such as Goomba, Nabit, and Baby Waluigi. Other characters include the standard Mario gang, Pauline, Luma, Chain Chomp, Petey, Dry Bowser, and more.
Several different game modes were shown off, as well. To start with, when choosing to play matches, players can pick whether or not Fever Rackets are allowed, the rule set, and other options to make the game as realistic or arcade-feeling as they’d like. Other modes include the following:
- Tournament
- Trial Towers
- Ring Shot
- Forest Court
- Pinball
- Racket Factory
- Wonder Court
Last but not least is the Adventure match, which takes players on a narrative journey. From the trailer, it looks like players will start by joining a tennis academy. However, they’ll face trials and battles using their tennis skills.
Mario Tennis Fever will also feature multiplayer. This includes using the GameShare feature, which lets Nintendo Switch 2 players invite and play with other Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 players who don’t own the game to join their session. Of course, Online Rooms will also be available, and there are even Ranked Matches for those serious about tennis.
