During the celebrations of the Tokyo Auto Salon, Honda announced that former Gran Turismo World Series champion Igor Omura Fraga earned a seat in the Super Formula championship.
You may know Fraga due to his multiple wins in the Gran Turismo World series. The 26-year-old Japanese-born Brazilian driver won the inaugural Nations Cup in 2018 and was on the teams that won the Manufacturers Cup in 2019 and 2021. He also won the Toyota Gazoo Racing GT Cup in 2022.
Incidentally, just a few days ago, he won the Race of Champions exhibition race at Polyphony Digital’s headquarters in Tokyo.
According to the announcement made during Honda’s livestreamed press conference, Fraga will now race in the upcoming Super Formula championship in the #65 PONOS Nakajima Racing.
In the 2024 championship, he actually served as a reserve driver for the team alongside his participation in the GT300 class of the SuperGT championship.
Now he has been promoted as a main driver for the team and it’s quite a validation for Fraga, as Super Formula is considered the top formula championship in Asia.
Fraga is one of the several drivers who graduated from Gran Turismo’s esports competitions and built himself a successful motorsports career.
Gran Turismo 7 is currently available for both PS5 and PS4.
