Today Sony Interactive Entertainment and Polyphony Digital hosted the traditional Gran Turismo 7 Race of Champions to close the year.
The race, which was hosted at Poliphony’s own headquarters in Tokyo, Japan, was won by Igor Omura Fraga. He was basically at home since he was born in Kanazawa, Japan, and currently races professionally in the country’s Super GT series.
Second place went to Coque López, while Mikail Hizal took third place.
Fraga basically dominated starting in third place and almost immediately taking the lead. Yet, the grand final was a tight quarters race on the Tokyo Expressway, and he was slammed on the guard rail, causing him to drop all the way to 9th place.
While most believed he was out of the race, he managed to climb the standings once again and claim the final win. Below you can check out the standings.
Below you can check the race out for yourself in the on-demand recording. Funnily, after the award ceremony at the end (at the 47:07 mark), you can see legendary Gran Turismo producer Kazunori Yamauchi at the keyboards, playing the traditional main theme Moon Over the Castle.
The man certainly has many talents.
if you’re unfamiliar with the Race of Champions, it’s an exhibition race traditionally hosted to cap the year of Gran Turismo competition, with current and previous Gran Turismo World Series champions at the wheel.
Incidentally, if you’re interested in the GT World Series, you can check out this year’s results for the Toyota Gazoo Racing GT Cup, the Manufacturers Cup, and the Nations Cup.
Gran Turismo 7 is currently available for PS5 and PS4.
Incidentally, if you want to try the game for yourself, there has never been a better time, as a brand-new and rather extensive demo titled My First Gran Turismo has just been released a few weeks ago.
