The debut game from solo developer Chris Cote and publisher Kwalee features “farming with a twist.” Players can grow typical crops like corn and pumpkins as well as unexpected things like teeth and eyeballs. Strange townsfolk and odd beings lurk around the town who can be befriended or even married. Like other farming sims, there is foraging, mining, fishing, decorating, calendar-based events, and more, but each activity has otherworldly and unsettling features that set it apart.

There is also turn-based combat and strategy involved. For players who want a more casual experience, there is a cozy difficulty that offers a peaceful life of harvesting and discovering the strange world around them. There is also a more challenging difficulty option for those who don’t mind encountering horrors where “the Old Gods are waiting.”

There is a dark lo-fi soundtrack as well as manga-inspired hand-drawn artwork to juxtapose the pixel art and make players feel immersed in the unsettling world.

Even though Welcome to Elderfield doesn’t release until next month, there is a demo currently available for players to try the game early. This demo features an area of the town and farm, the first dungeon, and a few other places to explore. According to the demo’s description, it is approximately 1/6 of the full game. Additionally, the developer states that demo feedback is taken into consideration, so players can chime in if they want to share their experience.

Below you can see what the game looks like in a trailer.

If horrific farming isn’t your thing, you can check out the more peaceful Tiny Eden or Farming Camp, which are both also releasing in September. That being said, if you want to read more about Welcome to Elderfield and try out the demo, you can visit the game’s Steam page right here.
