Two Fairy Tail indie games are being released later this year following the 2021-22 contest from Hiro Mashima-san himself.
In 2021, Mashima-san teamed up with Kodansha Game Creators Lab to hold a contest for indie Fairy Tail games. The winner would get 15 million yen (roughly $105,300 USD) and support from Kodansha. There weren’t many limits on what the game could be, it just needed to be based on Fairy Tail.
Three teams won the contest, and new trailers for two of them give fans a look at gameplay and release dates. Together, they make up the Fairy Tail Indie Game Guild.
The first game is Fairy Tail: Dungeons, a deck-building rogeulite coming to Steam on August 26, 2024. The game is centered around a mysterious dungeon that pops up below the Fairy Tail guild, taking away the abilities of anyone who enters it. Natsu and Happy go into it and are saved by Labi, who needs help saving their friends.
Players will venture into the dungeon with one character or with a team of three characters to help Labi. There are a limited number of turns in the dungeon, and players will use their experience and loot to strengthen each character’s deck.
Characters include Natsu, Lucy, Gray, Ezra, and Wendy, and Mashima-san designed the final boss. Each character has special abilities and strategies that suit their unique combat style. Fans can see screenshots watch the trailer for Fairy Tail: Dungeons below:
Next is Fairy Tail: Beach Volleyball Havoc, an action game centered around a volleyball tournament. It’s also coming to Steam but a bit later, on September 16, 2024.
The two-versus-two competition features 100 different types of magic and 32 characters to choose from. Players can play solo or take the game online with up to four players with Steam’s Remote Play Together feature.
Each time a team gets a point, their magic is enchanted. This lets them use more magic attacks, which builds up over the game and culminates with chaotic magic fun by the end.
Players will be able to unlock new characters as they play, along with illustrations. Plus, an art contest is being held to celebrate the game. More information on that can be found here. Screenshots and the trailer for Fairy Tail: Beach Volleyball Havoc is below:
The third game to win the contest, Fairy Tail: Birth of Magic, is still under development. However, the proposal was for a game about creating magic, adventuring with it, and encountering/battling players from all over the world.
