We get to take a look at a couple of races pretty much without interruption, and the game certainly has the arcade vibes you’d expect from its pedigree, including the sense of speed and the use of Nitro.

Of course, the game is still in development, so the developers at Genki caution that things may change before release. That being said, it’s very promising.

Tokyo Xtreme Racer will release in 2025 for PC on Steam, where it can already be wishlisted.

If you’re a young gamer, you may not be familiar with Tokyo Extreme Racer, or Shutoko Battle (Battle on the Expressway) as it’s called in Japan.

The series debuted in 1994 with Shutoko Battle ’94: Drift King for the Super Famicom, and it received basically yearly releases until 2006. After that, the series has gone dormant and spawned only two mobile games in 2011 and 2017, but we all know that mobile games don’t count.

In terms of consoles, the franchise spanned the Super Famicom, the original PlayStation, the Dreamcast, the PlayStation 2, PC, the Gameboy Advance, the PSP, the Xbox 360, and the PlayStation 3.

The English Tokyo Xtreme Racer title was introduced with the localization of the 1999 title Shutoko Battle for Dreamcast.

Now, Genki is finally bringing the legend back, and so far, so good.
