The event will start on Wednesday, July 2, and end on Monday, July 14.

As usual with this kind of event, players will be able to gain access to the game without the requirement to spend any money on it, simply by creating an account on the official website.

Once in the game, everyone will have access to a selection of 8 ships designed to provide access to most game looks available to get started and progress.

This event matches the Foundation Festival, an in-lore event that encourages civic participation within the United Empire of Earth, and is pretty much a celebration of the effort made by players to welcome newbies to the ‘verse.

Incidentally, a brand-new referral program will be implemented on July 2 as well, giving veteran players even more reasons to pull new players into the fold.

Those who will participate will be able to enjoy the latest patch, Alpha 4.2, while the next, Alpha 4.2.1, is already being tested.

If you’re unfamiliar with Star Citizen, it’s a PC exclusive, crowdfunded project directed by Chris Roberts of Wing Commander fame. It’s a multiplayer sandbox space simulator that has been in development for over a decade and in alpha for several years.

In the meantime, the crowdfunding total continues to grow, and it has recently passed $845 million. To be precise, it’s currently at $845,510,759. The game also has 5,756,179 registered users, albeit not all of them are paying customers. Many simply create an account to enjoy the free-to-play periods. like the one that is about to start.

A single-player campaign titled Squadron 42 is also in active development with a 2026 release window, starring an exceptional cast of famous actors, including Mark Hamill, Henry Cavill, Gary Oldman, Liam Cunningham, Gillian Anderson, and more.

Since the project has been in development for over a decade, you can see how Squadron 42 has evolved since its first reveal.

Full disclosure: the author of this article has backed Star Citizen’s crowdfunding campaign.
