The announcement came early this morning by way of the game’s official Twitter page, which thanked fans for their dedication to the game by stating, “This isn’t possible without you.” Nier Automata was originally released for the PS4 and PC Steam back in 2017 – with an Xbox One version released a year later and a Nintendo Switch port landing in 2022.

A sequel to the 2010 title Nier, which itself was a spin-off of the Drakenguard series by PlatinumGames back on the PS2, the game places players in the midst of a war between machine aliens and androids as the former attempts to take Earth back from the latter so that the few humans that remain can come out from hiding. It features both hack-and-slash gameplay and RPG elements while requiring you to play through the story multiple times via different perspectives to understand and see the full story.

As of February 2024, Nier: Automata had sold over 8 million copies. That means that this year alone, the title has sold over 1 million copies, which is pretty impressive for a title that is now approaching its eight-year anniversary, which is February for Japan and March for North America.

Even with this success, there has been no talk of another sequel coming in the Nier series, though a remaster of the original was released in 2021 and was titled Replicant ver.1.22474487139. The remaster has shipped 1.5 million copies worldwide as of 2022, serving as even more proof that fans are craving anything they can get their hands on for the series.
