Today, it was revealed that a brand-new anime series in the Evangelion franchise is in production at Studio Khara and CloverWorks.
The announcement came during the final program of the Evangelion:30+; 30th Anniversary of Evangelion event, held in Yokohama. Kazuya Tsurumaki (Rebuild films and Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX) is set to helm the project alongside Toko Yatabe, who was an assistant director on Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time.
The series will also feature two major names from the NieR franchise, as NieR creator Yoko Taro is penning the script and series composition, and NieR composer Keiichi Okabe is providing the music.
Neon Genesis Evangelion TV anime was directed by Hideaki Anno and animated by Gainax. The show aired for 26 episodes from October 1995 to March 1996, followed by two films, Death & Rebirth and The End of Evangelion, released in 1997. The story takes place in 2015, when mysterious beings known as ‘Angels’, each with unique threats, have begun invading Tokyo-3. The only hope of stopping these threats is put in the hands of a group of teens, including protagonist Shinji Ikari.
Together, he and his comrades must pilot the Evangelion, a human-shaped ultimate weapon, and face the Angels in a battle that will determine the fate of mankind. Not all is as it seems on the surface, as the reason behind the Angels, and why they are here, uncovers a shocking truth.
The series maintained its cult following over the years, eventually returning as a quartet of reimagined Rebuild of Evangelion films from Studio Khara:
- Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone (2007)
- Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance (2009)
- Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo (2012)
- Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time (2021)
Last year, Pixelity Inc. officially revealed the title of its Neon Genesis Evangelion video game project, Evangelion: Δ Cross Reflections. The game is the first-ever adaptation of the hit sci-fi anime and manga into XR (Extended Reality), blending elements of the virtual and real worlds through augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and mixed reality (MR) to create a unique experience.
It is planned to be a trilogy, placing players in the shoes of an original character and allowing them to explore the world and events of all 26 episodes. For more information on this and the upcoming series, be sure to check back to Simulation Daily for updates.
