Game of Thrones fans have been clamoring for a long time for a proper AAA game dedicated to the popular franchise originated from A Song of Ice and Fire by George R. R. Martin.
Yet, I don’t think it’s unfair to say that the episodic adventure games by Telltale Games that are now a decade old are the only decent video games we got dedicated to the franchise.
Korean developer Netmarble presented a brand new GoT game at G-Star, titled Game of Thrones: Kingsroad, and it’s a full-fledged open-world action RPG licensed by Warner Bros. (which manifested its intention to focus on the franchise, among others, at its latest financial conference call).
You can check out the debut trailer below.
Unfortunately, if you’ve read our headline, you already know that there’s a big caveat to this all, and it’s the fact that the game has been announced only for iOS and Android.
You put all this effort into creating an open-world action RPG that actually appears to look decent, and then you put it on smartphones. Thanks for nothing, Netmarble.
An official site is available in English, but it offers no further information besides the fact that the game is coming in 2025.
At this point, I think Warner Bros.’ executives should feel really ashamed of the fact that the best Game of Thrones game available (and not by a small margin) is a fan-made mod for Crusader Kings 3.
Warner Bros. has not exactly shined in managing its franchises as of late, especially in light of the Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League debacle. Yet, I don’t think many popular franchises have been mismanaged as badly on the gaming side as Game of Thrones.
Of course, Game of Thrones: Kingsroad may still be not that bad, or even good, but just imagine how much better it’d look (and likely play) if it was a proper AAA release for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. This series and the world created by George R. R. Martin have so much potential. It’s a pity to see it squandered.
