The scarcity of housing options in many Final Fantasy XIV servers has become an issue that many are concerned about, but Square Enix has plans.

During a press conference at Final Fantasy XIV Fan Festival 2026 in Tokyo, we asked Yoshida-san whether we can expect new housing wards in the planets rebuilt via the Cosmic Exploration feature, as it happened with Ishgard.

Yoshida-san excluded the possibility of new housing areas in new places for the moment, as the team is focusing on a more fundamental implementation.

“For the time being, we don’t have any plans to create new housing areas in a new region. More than that, we want to prioritize giving a house with a garden to as many players as possible.

If we create a housing area in a specific place, it increases houses only in that place. Instead, we’re considering creating a system for the entirety of Final Fantasy XIV. Actually, we have narrowed down that plan to about three options, and we want to greatly expand housing with one of those options.

That being said, if we consider the feature I talked about earlier, letting S-size houses have L-size interiors, when it’s implemented, there’s a chance that everyone will be satisfied with that. If that happens, and we add an extreme amount of land plots, we may end up having too many vacancies.

Another possibility is giving you an instanced house with a garden, but then no one would pass by, and it would be basically solo content. Of course, you could invite people over, or leave access set to public so people can visit anytime. Yet, it wouldn’t be like the current housing wards where random players can walk by and say, ‘Wow, look at that beautiful house!’

So, we wonder if that’s really something players would want. We are trying to understand exactly what would make players say, ‘Yes! This is exactly what I wanted!’

For now, I believe every option has pros and cons. We need to properly evaluate that, including updates from 8.1 and onward.

However, as I also said earlier today, if we wait to order the servers after we make that decision, it’ll be too late. So I told the team to go ahead and buy them.

To sum it up, we won’t have new housing areas for a while, and we would like to prioritize the fundamental goal of providing everyone with land and houses.”

Final Fantasy XIV Evercold releases on February 23, 2027 (with early access for pre-orders on February 19) for PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2.”

If you’d like to learn more about the expansion, you can check out the details from the first Fan Festival in the United States, what we learned during the second Fan Festival in Germany, and finally, what was shared here in Japan yesterday.

You can also read about a major learning from Dawntrail that Yoshida-san and his team applied to the development of Evercold.
