Among other things, the new Final Fantasy XIV expansion Evercold will feature a very different pacing for storytelling compared to Dawntrail.
During a press conference at Final Fantasy XIV Fan Festival 2026 in Tokyo, we asked Yoshida-san if he had a specific major lesson he’s carrying on from Dawntrail into the creation of Evercold.
Yoshida-san indeed mentioned main story pacing, and how it’s going to be different, leaving the exploration of deeper cultural aspects and the setting to side quests.
“The highest priority for us this time is the pacing. Last time, in Dawntrail, the focus was on encountering a new continent, new lands, new cultures, and new people. As a result, especially early on, we tried to explain their values and backgrounds in great detail. Unfortunately, this made the main scenario feel slow.
Because the progression of the story slowed down so much, it conflicted with the players’ desire to push forward. As the director, the responsibility for that issue is mine.
So this time, we are leaving the deeper exploration of the lore and portrayal of daily life until later [in side-quests], so that players can enjoy those details at their own pace after [playing the main scenario]. We’ve paid very close attention to the story’s narrative flow and pacing for this expansion.
Thinking about how Final Fantasy XIV as a whole is evolving, we have to consider how valuable gamers’ time is nowadays. Especially in today’s gaming landscape, if a story doesn’t move at a swift, lively pace, it’s hard for a game to be a hit. That is exactly why we are focusing on the pacing so much this time.”
It’ll certainly be interesting to see how this will influence the storytelling and players’ enjoyment of it in Evercold. We’ll know soon, when it releases on February 23, 2027 (with early access for pre-orders on February 19) for PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2.
