Prime Video has announced that it’s releasing a five-part docuseries, Esports World Cup: Level Up, directed by the Emmy-winning filmmaker RJ Cutler, and will start on June 6.
Esports World Cup: Level Up goes into the behind-the-scenes actions of the Esports World Cup 2024. This Esports World Cup was particularly important because of the over $60 million in prize money that fueled the competition.
The series will be released weekly starting on June 6, and it’s exclusive to Prime Video. Director RJ Cutler is best known for his work on Billie Eilish: The World’s a Little Blurry, Elton John: Never Too Late, and Martha. John Dorsey is the showrunner with Jane Cha Cutler, Trevor Smith, Elise Pearlstein, and Mark Blatty as Executive Producers.
The docuseries will follow players and esports club CEOs. It gives viewers a look at what it means to be an elite esports athlete, which is what a lot of the new generation is becoming. There are over 500 million fans who tuned into the Esports World Cup 2024 around the world, which lasted for eight weeks.
Some of the main players and stories told in the docuseries include:
- Soka from Team Falcons
- Faker from T1
- Sanford from Team Liquid
- Drazah from Atlanta FaZe
- Chel and Cinny from Team Vitality
- Yevhen Zolotarov, CEO of NAVI
- Mossad Aldossary, CEO of Team Falcons
Director Cutler spoke a bit about what the docuseries shows:
“What drew me to the Esports World Cup was the compelling human stories unfolding within this high-stakes arena. Level Up isn’t just about the incredible competition and prize money; it’s about the dedication, the passion, and the sheer will of these athletes and teams pushing the boundaries of what’s possible. Under high pressure, we discover the true character of the competitors who vie for $60 million, but who also expose their humanity in the process.”
The CEO of the Esports World Cup Foundation, Ralf Reichert, also spoke about the docuseries:
“A win might make the headlines — but the real story is the people behind it. Level Up dives into the human side of esports: the pressure, the ambition, the sacrifices. It’s about what it really takes to compete at the highest level — and why it matters. R.J. is the best at bringing those stories to life, and this one captures the heart of what we’re building.”
While fans in 240 countries look back at the Esports World Cup 2024, the Esports World Cup 2025 is just around the corner. It’s featuring a few new games this year as well, including Chess esports and GeoGuessr, the online navigation game.
