The trailer showcases a flight of American F-16C fighters tasked with dropping bombs on a bridge across the Kandalaksha Gulf in Murmansk Oblast, Russia.

As they initiate their attack run, they are attacked by a Russian MiG-31 Foxhound, but as the Vipers drop their payload and break to defend, we don’t get to see the outcome.

You can watch it below.

If you’re unfamiliar with the Arctic Thunder campaign, it’s actually a set of two coming with the next big update of DCS World before the end of the year.

Set on the Kola map by Orbx, the two twin campaigns follow different paths within the same story. This puts you at the controls of American F-16C Vipers, while the other side (developed by Baltic Dragon) places you in the seat of Finnish F/A-18C fighters.

The setting is an alternate-history conflict portraying an attack by Russia in an attempt to stop Finland’s accession to NATO in 2024. Given today’s trailer, NATO forces won’t just stay on the defensive.

If you’re unfamiliar with DCS World, it’s a free-to-play military flight simulator focusing on aviation from World War 2 to the present day. It’s available exclusively on PC (via Steam or Eagle Dynamics’ own store).

As usual, it’s good to remember that fully enjoying the simulator requires the purchase of additional modules, so it’s “free” only in name, albeit Eagle Dynamics has a pretty solid trial and introductory discount programs, on top of frequent sales.

DCS World is well known among enthusiasts to be very challenging for those who aren’t familiar with hardcore flying simulation. Enjoying most of its advanced aircraft requires days or even weeks of study. Of course, this isn’t necessarily a bad thing and many hardcore simmers find it quite rewarding.
