Paradox Interactive has released the seventh developer diary for Europa Universalis 5, this time detailing the upcoming diplomacy system and how it works.

Diplomacy focuses on the relationships between nations, and Europa Universalis 5 will feature a new diplomat system. Diplomats will essentially be a type of currency, where players will need one to take any kind of diplomatic action.

Diplomats are limited to the Diplomatic Range that a country has. This can be increased, and it increases exponentially as time progresses and relationships are forged.

Nations are limited by their Diplomatic Capacity, which determines how many formal relationships a nation can have with others. This also increases as a country progresses and through other means, like building an embassy in other nations.

Other parts of the Diplomatic system in Europa Universalis 5 include the following:

  • Diplomatic Reputation
  • Favors between nations
  • Royal Marriages
  • Rival nations
  • International Organizations

Diplomacy also means keeping your subjects happy, and there are five different types of subjects in Europa Universalis 5: tributaries, colonial subjects, dominions, vassals, and fiefdoms.

Of course, diplomatic relationships can go sour, and Casus Belli helps players prepare for war and create a spy network to take down enemies from the inside.

Players can watch the developer diary itself for Diplomacy in Europa Universalis 5 below:

Fans can also check out breakdowns of the religious systems and the economic systems.

Europa Universalis is set to release on November 4, 2025, on PC. It was announced earlier this year in timing that lined up perfectly with (and seems to be a salute to) the introduction of the new Pope.
