The conversation revolved around numerous tech topics for upcoming consoles, including upscaling FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) and PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), Radiance Cores, and a new Universal Compression system.

For FSR, they discuss neural networks already found in upscalers like AMD FSR and the PS5 Pro’s PSSR, and how Neural arrays will lead to better FSR, better ray regeneration, and brand new machine learning power features. On the other hand, Radiance Cores will address GPU bottlenecks, with the current approach to ray tracing and lighting tech having already current approach its limits.

Radiance Cores will be responsible for handling ray tracing and path tracing, which will hopefully free up the CPU for geometry and simulation, and lets the GPU focus on shading and lighting. Last but not least, Universal Compression will be used as a way to check every piece of data headed to memory, not just textures and compress it whenever possible.

Where DCC looks at textures and render targets, Universal Compression would evaluate everything so that the GPU can deliver more detail, higher frame rates, and greater efficiency. At the end of the video, Cerny mentions a “future console” coming in “a few years’ time,” hinting at the inevitable release of the PS6.
