Developer Supermassive Games has completely remade the horror game set on Blackwood Mountain in Unreal Engine 5. The original was released in 2015, and Supermassive Games is updating it to make it a more “‘modern horror’ experience.”

To do so, it’s updated all of the graphics, including animations. Supermassive is utilizing several Unreal Engine 5 features, such as raytracing and better atmosphere features.

Character upgrades are one of the most flashy things fans will notice. All of the models are getting updated with better textures, rendering, and materials. Injuries are much more dynamic and situational, as well.

This is definitely noticeable in the cinematography, which has new camera controls. Players can see the game from new perspectives with an updated look. The new rendering techniques with Unreal Engine 5 have also made it so that everything runs smoother as well.

While Supermassive Games didn’t change the actual content of the narrative, it did adjust the Prologue a bit. Specifically, it changed the pacing and added extra scenes for the Washingtons. This is meant to highlight how close the family is and push the emotions of players even further.

Fans can look forward to finding the original totems all over again, this time in new places. Plus, there are new interactions and areas for the totems, furthering the world-building and giving original players a better experience. There will also be more usability and accessibility settings, too.

The Until Dawn remake will be released on October 4, 2024 on PC and PlayStation 5 – just in time for the Halloween season. Players can start pre-ordering it on August 21, 2024.
