Big capital ships have been flying around Star Citizen for a while, but players will finally be able to officially play with one of them starting tomorrow.
Cloud Imperium Games announced that it will release the massive Aegis Idris frigate tomorrow, May 15, celebrating the beginning of Invictus Launch Week.
The Idris will be the largest capital ship available in the game for players to fly, measuring a massive 240 meters in length and bristling with weapons.
It’s designed for multiplayer gameplay, to be crewed by several players and even capable of launching fighters from its flight deck. It’s pretty much the realization of Star Citizen’s multiplayer premise.
Players already had a taste of it, since they have been able to capture and temporarily fly Idris frigates during past events, but from tomorrow on, it’ll be a full-fledged player ship that they can own and enjoy without limitations.
Even better, due to the Invictus Launch Week free fly event, it’s very likely that everyone will be able to test it out. We can certainly expect to see many around the verse.
This is not the only vehicle that will launch during the event, but in the meantime, you can check out a trailer below.
It’s worth mentioning that the Idris is Star Citizen’s biggest warship only for now, as more are coming, like the Javelin destroyer, the Kraken light carrier, all the way up to the massive Bengal strike carrier, but for now, the crown temporarily belongs to the Idris.
This follows the release of update Alpha 4.1.1, which includes tons of new missions, the ability to quantum travel to one’s unattended vehicle (which is a massive quality-of-life improvement), new hairstyles, weapon and ship updates, and much more.
If you’re unfamiliar with Star Citizen, it’s a PC exclusive crowdfunded project directed by Chris Roberts, who created the beloved Wing Commander series in the days of early PC gaming. It’s a multiplayer sandbox space simulator that has been in development for over a decade and in alpha for several years.
In the meantime, the crowdfunding total continues to grow, and it recently passed $810 million. To be precise, it’s currently at $810,212,341. The game also has 5,645,549 registered users, albeit not all of them are paying customers. Many simply create an account to enjoy the occasional free-to-play periods like the one coming tomorrow.
The single-player campaign titled Squadron 42 is also in active development, starring an exceptional cast of famous actors, including Mark Hamill, Henry Cavill, Gary Oldman, Liam Cunningham, Gillian Anderson, and more.
Since the project has been in development for over a decade, you can see how Squadron 42 has evolved since its first reveal.
