But before we move to the ships, the launch of IAE 2955 means that the name is now free to play from today until December 3.

For the next two weeks, players who don’t have an account will be able to create one on the official website, download the client, and play without the need to pay for the game, while also enjoying almost all the ships and vehicles in the game on a brand-based rotation.

Moving on to the new ships, we start with the RSI Perseus, a massive 100m-long patrol gunship with heavy weapons (two dual size-8 plus dual size-3 turrets, two additional remote dual size-3 turrets, dual Size-5 torpedo launchers, and 6 point-defence turrets) designed to be manned by a crew of 7 players.

You can check it out in the trailer below.

The next ship is much smaller, and it’s the RSI Salvation, a new starter ship for new players dedicated to those who want to begin their Star Citizen careers with salvaging derelict hulls and destroyed ships.

In fact, it comes with its own starter pack that includes access to the game on top of the ship, priced at $75, now discounted by 15% for the event to $63.75.

The Salvation has a bare minimum armament, but lets you salvage abandoned and destroyed ships, which is a decent way to make money in the game’s universe peacefully.

You can check it out below together with commentary from its developers.

If you’re unfamiliar with Star Citizen, it’s a PC exclusive, crowdfunded project directed by Chris Roberts of Wing Commander fame. It’s a multiplayer sandbox space simulator that has been in development for over a decade and in alpha for several years. It has just been updated to Alpha 4.4 with the addition of the third star system, Nyx.

In the meantime, the crowdfunding total continues to grow, and it’s almost $889 million. To be precise, it’s currently at $888,904,398. Star Citizen also recently passed 6 million registered accounts, and it’s now sitting comfortably on 6,035,041. Of course, not all of them are paying customers. Many simply create an account to enjoy the free-to-play periods, like the one that just started.

A single-player campaign titled Squadron 42 is also in active development with a 2026 release window, starring an exceptional cast of famous actors, including Mark Hamill, Henry Cavill, Gary Oldman, Liam Cunningham, Gillian Anderson, and more.

Since the project has been in development for over a decade, you can see how Squadron 42 has evolved since its first reveal.

Full disclosure: the author of this article has backed Star Citizen’s crowdfunding campaign.
