Today Cloud Imperium Games released a rather interesting video about a set of features coming to Star Citizen focusing on fire.

The developers of the game have been working on fire for quite a while, but we finally get to see it in all its glory in the form that will be implemented in version Alpha 4.0 which is expected to come at some point this year.

We get to see the advanced system and how it handles fire within ships, from small ignition points propagating dynamically to massive and rather scary blazes.

The video also discusses the challenges of making all of this work in an online game and shows how you can start fires or douse them, from the use of extinguishers to venting the oxygen out of your ship.

Lastly, we see how extinguished fires leave visible burned scars that you’ll need to repair. You can check the video out for yourself below.

Incidentally, it’s worth mentioning that Alpha 4.0 won’t be the next update. The developer is currently testing Alpha 3.24, which will bring a lot of highly-anticipated features and should come soon.

If you’re unfamiliar with Star Citizen, it’s a crowdfunded multiplayer open-universe sandbox space simulator that has been in development for over a decade. It’s directed by Chris Roberts, whom you may know for creating the beloved Wing Commander series.

It has received over $716 million in crowdfunding ($716,129,843 at the moment of this writing) and counts 5,310,111 registered users, albeit many of them aren’t paying customers, as they register accounts to participate in Free Fly events like the one that will start in a few days, on August 15.

A single-player campaign named Squadron 42 is also in development, boasting a star-studded cast including Mark Hamill, Henry Cavill, Gary Oldman, Liam Cunningham, Gillian Anderson, and many more well-known actors.

If you’re interested in Star Citizen, learning how to fly certainly can’t hurt. To that end, you can check out our handy guide on how to get started with flight simulators.

Full disclosure: the author of this article has backed Star Citizen’s crowdfunding campaign.
