The new ship is the Anvil Asgard, a variation of the Anvil Valkyrie Dropship. While the Valkyrie is designed to drop troops, the Ashard exists to deliver another kind of firepower, tanks and other vehicles.

Quite obviously, the huge hold of the Asgard is designed around the gargantuan Nova Tank, which before required much larger transports like the Hercules Starlifter.

Yet, the Asgard isn’t just a transport. It’s well armored and equipped with 6 size-3 gun front-facing mounts, an additional gun turret, and a missile rack capable of delivering 16 size-3 missiles.

It can deliver the goods, take a punch, and fight back. On top of that, if you’re not carrying vehicles, the hold can fit 180 SCU of cargo, which means the Asgard can easily double up as a well-defended freight ship.

You can check it out in action and hear from the developers below. If you’re interested in more new ships, you can check out the Mirai Guardian MX and the MISC Starlancer TAC.

As usual, the Asgard can be purchased with real money for now (and can be rented for free for a limited time at Invictus Launch Week), but it will become purchasable with credits earned by playing the game in the near future.

If you’re unfamiliar with Star Citizen, it’s a PC exclusive crowdfunded project directed by Chris Roberts, who created the beloved Wing Commander series in the days of early PC gaming. It’s a multiplayer sandbox space simulator that has been in development for over a decade and in alpha for several years.

In the meantime, the crowdfunding total continues to grow, and it just passed $825 million. To be precise, it’s currently at $825,492,878. The game also has 5,689,755 registered users, albeit not all of them are paying customers. Many simply create an account to enjoy the occasional free-to-play periods like the one that is currently going on.

If you’re wondering, this means that the game has made over $15 million since the start of Invictus Launch Week, over a week ago.

The single-player campaign titled Squadron 42 is also in active development, starring an exceptional cast of famous actors, including Mark Hamill, Henry Cavill, Gary Oldman, Liam Cunningham, Gillian Anderson, and more.

Since the project has been in development for over a decade, you can see how Squadron 42 has evolved since its first reveal.

Full disclosure: the author of this article has backed Star Citizen’s crowdfunding campaign.
