Today, Square Enix announced that it’s canceling the development of Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link, its mobile ARPG project set in the Kingdom Hearts universe.

In a post on X, the official Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link account tells fans exactly why: the developers didn’t think they could create a game that functioned well as a long-term live service game.

Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link was first announced back in 2022 as part of the series’ 20th anniversary announcements. There were several closed beta tests through the years, though the initial 2024 release was pushed back last year.

Now, Square Enix is thanking fans for their participation in these betas and apologizing for its decision. While they’re finished working on the mobile game, developers are focusing all their time on Kingdom Hearts 4.

Kingdom Hearts 4 was also announced back in 2022 in the same anniversary event. However, there’s been nothing else revealed since. This nod to the upcoming game is reassuring for many.

While the news that Missing-Link is cancelled is sad, it’s not completely unexpected. Just yesterday, Square Enix’s financial results revealed that the group is focusing on quality over quantity. The goal is to release major games in the group’s key IPs consistently by March 2027, and reworking its pipeline and focusing on quality over quantity helps it get there.

Part of this includes pulling games from mobile to other platforms, which is what Square Enix did last year with Fantasian.

So, while Missing-Link fans may have been left in the dust, there’s still a lot to look forward to — especially for Square Enix fans as a whole.
