Square Enix Announces Declining Financial Results in Q1

According to the financial documents provided by Sony, 3.8 million PS5 units were sold to retailers during the quarter, bringing the total lifetime shipments for the console to 65.5 million units.

If you’re interested in the comparison, Nintendo Switch has shipped 2.62 million units during the same quarter.

As for software units, Sony has shopped 77.7 million copies during the quarter, of which 5.3 million units were first-party games. The digital download ratio was 70%

Sales for the Game & Network Services business, which includes PlayStation and PlayStation Network, were 117.4 billion yen, significantly up (+12%) year-on-year.

This was due to an increase in sales of third-party games and DLC, on top of PlayStation Network revenue, mainly from PlayStation Plus.

Operating income was 89.9 billion yen. Again a significant increase (+184%) year-on-year due to an improvement in hardware profitability on top of the same reasons mentioned or sales.

Sony has also increased its forecast for both sales and operating income for the full fiscal year respectively to 170 billion yen (a 4% upward revision) and 35 billion yen (an 8% upward revision), as you can see below.

Sony also mentions that PlayStation Network monthly active users during the quarter were 116 million. The numbers show significant growth year-on-year (from 107 million) but were flat quarter-on-quarter. Sony has not given any specific numbers for PlayStation Plus subscribers for a long time.

Looking at Sony as a whole company, both Sales and operating income were up year-on-year, as you can see below.
