Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin, the indie gem centered around rice farming and action-platforming play, is getting a successor published by XSEED in North America called Sakuna Chronicles: Kokorowa and the Gears of Creation.
Sakuna Chronicles: Kokorowa and the Gears of Creation is a spin-off game focused on Princess Kokorowa, the Goddess of Invention and Sakuna’s best friend. After the appearance of a mysterious automaton with free will shows up at her doorstep, Princess Kokorowa and new deities will oversee the advances in automaton technology and prevent war.
The game is currently being developed by Edelweiss, the same developer behind the first Sakuna game. There’s currently no release date yet, and very little is known about what gameplay will be like or what systems it’ll be on. However, XSEED released a trailer introducing the premise of the game with in-development footage, which fans can view below:
For more context, Kokorowa was the one who invented automatons in the first place. Familiar characters also popped up in the trailer, like Lady Kamuhitsuki. This is listed as the first in the expanding Sakuna series, which gives fans hope that more may come if things are successful.
This is one of the first bigger indie titles to be announced since XSEED Games and Marvelous USA revealed their structural changes in the West. As an indie game, XSEED will be handling the publishing of Sakuna Chronicles: Kokorowa and the Gears of Creation.
For those who want to jump into the Sakuna world prior to the release of Sakuna Chronicles, Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin is currently on sale for 50% as part of XSEED’s 20th anniversary.
