Soon, the popular zombie outbreak simulator and RPG Project Zomboid will receive update 42.20 in its stable branch, and it’s bringing a massive map overhaul.

As explained in the official post, the update, which we know will release on July 29, will change the Knox Event Exclusion Zone radically, much beyond what players already experienced in the unstable branch.

The goal is to make the towns feel more lived in, natural, and believable as locations that existed before the outbreak.

The following cities have been completely reworked:

  • Riverside
  • West Point
  • Rosewood
  • Fallas Lake
  • Muldraugh
  • Ekron
  • Dixie

The rest of the map will be reworked to the same standards in future updates. Such standards are:

  • An idiosyncratic style for each town
  • All buildings and houses are now unique
  • Consistent landscaping between buildings
  • Unique tiles where necessary

The surface area of the map has been effectively doubled, with 1,400 new unique buildings and 20,000 new tiles, bringing the total of tiles to a whopping 35,000.

There will also be 400 procedural basements and 75 unique ones, hundreds of posters and wall decorations, light overlays for all light sources, snow overlays, new burned tile variations, new 30-degree roofs, many more types of windows, all the crafting tiles, and more.

If you’d like a glimpse of what that entails, you can check out the trailer below.

Project Zomboid is available in early access for PC, Mac, and Linux on Steam and GOG.

As a matter of fact, the game is one of the longest-surviving early access games, having had the label for almost 13 years. That being said, it has been feature-rich and extremely enjoyable for many years, so many of its fans don’t really mind.
